Role Models for Young Blacks
Black people have fought and earned a place in the American society on an equal footing with whites after a long and bitter struggle. They have proved their mettle in every field be it academics, sports, or movies. Many people believe that the defining moment in the history of people of African American descent came when Barak Obama became the President of the country. Even though there are incidents of racial discrimination even today, more and more of black men and women have excelled in their respective spheres to prove their worth in the American society. The latest individuals to join the list of eminent Americans are Simone Biles and Sloane Stephens.
Simone Biles is a young gymnast who has brought glory to the nation by winning gold medal at 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In fact, this pocket sized dynamo (Simone is only 4 feet 8 inches in height) won not one but 5 gold medals in gymnastics at Rio Olympics. Simone made her debut in senior level only in 2013 but she has been dominating the world of gymnastics ever since. She is the first woman to have won all around titles at the national championships 4 items consecutively. This is not all as Simone has also been world champion for the last three years in a row.
Simone now has 19 Olympics and World championship medals under her belt to prove that she is the greatest Gymnast in the world at present.
This year, Simone appeared in the reality TV series ‘Dancing with the Stars’. She paired with Sasha Farber to win the hearts of the audiences.
Sloane Stephens is a young black American Tennis player. She has impressed everyone, including her critics, with her aggressive baseline play. With Williams sisters nearing the end of their careers, it is time for this young athlete to show the world that the dominance of the world tennis shall continue without any interruption.
It was in 2013 when Sloane first caught the attention of the tennis fans. She upset Serena Williams at the quarterfinal stage of the Australian Open then. She went on to reach the semi final where she was defeated by Victoria Azarenka. Barely 5 months later, Sloane reached quarterfinal at the Wimbledon. There, she lost to Marion Bartoli who was the eventual winner. In 2015, Sloane won her first WTA title at Citi Open. It did not take her long to capture her first Grand Slam when she won the U.S Open in 2017. She defeated Madison Keys in the final.
Experts see a lot of potential in Sloane to rule the world of female tennis for a long time to come. It is not just her fast serve but also her solid game at the baseline that make her a complete player. She has a strong forehand and shows a lot of athleticism on the court.
